Pomodorini a "piennolo"

The shelter of men and memories

The Marina di Conca is delightful with its little houses on the seashore and the chapel dedicated to Santa Maria della Neve, which every year rejoices in colors and lights on the feast of August 5th. It is easy, for example, to distinguish the house with the arches that emerge from the water, the ancient “maccharonia” of the Buonocore or the fourteenth-century Mele house, once the “guesthouse” of the monastery of Santa Rosa and the current Town Hall; and gradually the other buildings and villas that can be admired perhaps during a walk in this healthy air. Here farmers and sailors continue to live and rejoice with little, in this serene country that every day of the year can offer anyone its happiness.

Air and sea to return to love

“Acqua roce”, “‘o rummiello”, “‘ o runghetiello”, “‘a senghetella”, “‘ o funtanone” and “punta ape”, are some of the names, extraneous to the official toponymy, with which in the language of the fishermen the numerous cliffs are indicated. They are traditional names that communicate, in all the most frank beauty, the characteristics of this stretch of turquoise sea, in which nature is perhaps expressed in its most lyrical form. They are places that enter the heart and become an incessant invitation to return and endlessly love this air and this sea.

Conca of steps

It is small Conca, but perhaps one day is not enough to visit it because its beauties are scattered along many “stairways” that justify the variant of the name: Conca dei gradini. It is not possible to give up the walk in S. Antonio, quiet, panoramic, balsamic and romantic, among the most pleasant of the coast. It starts from the path which is called “under the poles” or even of the “five essences”, those of the vine, lemon, olive, carob and pomegranate. The stages of the route are: the church of S. Antonio, which is the Cathedral of Conca, the church of S. Michele and a white, small sacred shrine placed on the edge of a long rock – called “the table” – from which they see, impressive and upsetting, the precipices and ravines that are lost in the shadow of a wild and deep gorge, whose name – Furore – is the most precise definition of the place.

Conca of heaven

For some time, it seemed that the opening of the Sorrento-Amalfi-Salerno national road caused a place like Conca to fall by the wayside, which until then had been a key point and a useful support in maritime traffic. And then the tonnara was supplanted by more powerful and modern technologies: these were certainly not great premises for a prosperous future. But no: the last few years have seen the awakening and rebirth of this precious location. The most sensational examples are certainly the passages by Jacqueline Kennedy, the Queen of Holland and Gianni Agnelli, who chose the sea and the disarming landscape beauties of Conca dei Marini to stop for a swim. On the other hand, there are numerous quotations from artists, writers and visitors from all over the world who let themselves be seduced by these places, creating the now famous name of “Conca di Cielo”.

Where peace lives

Many illustrious visitors have almost felt a feeling of infinity, a divine imprint between the streets and houses of this pearl of the Amalfi Coast. Perhaps because the houses are not crowded, but scattered here and there, always fenced in green. There are no grandiose buildings, but single-family residences of great simplicity. Tradition is present everywhere: in the cheek-shaped domes, in the classic loggia and in the external staircase. White is the master, on the robust and ancient walls, with rounded corners without eaves. From the sea, all this looks like a great history book, open on the lectern of the hills. Peace lives here: where the artistic work of the palm, that of the pots and baskets for fishing and hand embroidery, still do today.

Where the legends of the sea rest

Conca dei Marini, the ancient “Cossa” of the Tyrrhenians, became a Roman colony in 481 BC. and was a precious ally of Rome in the second Punic war. It has always had a valid merchant marine, in contact with the different Mediterranean countries. “This active and continuous traffic made Conca flourish for several centuries, mainly under the dynasties of the Swabians and Angevins of Sicily and Naples”. This prosperity continued for several centuries, parallel to that of the Amalfi republic which had a naval shelter here and perhaps the crew recruiting center, in particular under the Swabian and Angevin dynasties. In the tenth century, a violent cataclysm destroyed many buildings, including the church of Santa Maria “de Grado”, which was rebuilt by the inhabitants in the following century, on the site where the church of Santa Rosa currently stands. Even today this place is the most important testimony of the history of Conca dei Marini. In 1681, with the support of the Municipality and the great will of Sister Maria Pandolfi, a Dominican Convent was founded which was active until our century. Today, in the structure of the former convent, there is a hotel that bears the same name as the church: here, on the main terrace, you have the most enchanting and ringing panoramic view of the Gulf of Salerno.

Not to be missed gastronomy

As it is true that the renowned sfogliatella is ready to welcome, in the sweetest and most captivating way, the lovers of the “pleasures of the table”, it is even more true that the cuisine of Conca dei Marini should be enjoyed from the first to the last (delicious) dish. Here are the “highlights” of the Menu:

Pennette with “piennolo” tomato
Pennette with zucchini from the garden
Spaghetti with red coral shrimp sauce
Rock fish soup
Lemon leaf rabbit
Aubergine and courgette parmigiana
“Sfogliatella Santa Rosa”
“Passolini”: raisins in a tiny bag (made with lemon-scented leaves and tied with a thin wire of reed)

A curiosity for a select few:
Sea nettle – a seaweed (available just over a meter deep) is prepared like a pancake: it is a unique delicacy of its kind, absolutely typical. Those who want to taste it will have to: wait for the favorable season (which, generally, runs from June to September) and the appropriate time when the sea conditions will have allowed it to be fished.

The monastery of Santa Rosa

On the road that leads to Amalfi, as if to protect the quiet of Conca dei Marini from above, there is the former convent of Santa Rosa, now home to a hotel that has retained its name. It can be called the flagship of the resort or the “Seventh Heaven” of the coast. Its outline is visible from Capodorso and appears more and more imposing as you proceed towards Amalfi. In the next church there is the head of San Barnaba Apostolo, the most important relic of the province after the body of S. Matteo in Salerno and that of S. Andrea in Amalfi. It is precisely in the seventeenth-century monastery that the famous (and unmissable) sfogliatella “Santarosa” saw the light.

The Emerald Grotto

A “unicum” is the emerald grotto nestled in the silent and solemn bay of Conca, in a fold of the coastal rim. It was found in 1932 by a fisherman who later, until his death, wore a band that glorified him with the writing: “discoverer of the cave”. We owe a lot to him: to agree on this, just enter the cave when, with the sun high and the sea calm, incisions of light are created, with reflections and flashes that color the whole internal environment and give it that unique charm, which has already made many tourists invaghire. It can be accessed from the national road, by lift or staircase, or from the sea. At the entrance dock, a raft introduces into the cave which, as if by magic, turns into a fantastic green temple, full of caryatids, figures, curtains and bas-reliefs: the work of the millennia and the water dripping from the vaults. But what is most surprising is seeing numerous and stalagmite structures rise from the sea. These, logically, could not have formed if the cave had not once been dry and could not now be in the water if, due to the phenomenon of bradyseism, the soil had not lowered, bringing the lower part of the cave intact into the sea . Interest in the Emerald Grotto has grown since, in 1956, divers laid a white ceramic nativity scene on the seabed.

The Tower of silence

The most beautiful tower on the Riviera, which rides on a picturesque and mighty promontory, could not be found here. Of quadrangular shape, it reveals its sixteenth-century origin as on this coast the circular towers, less resistant, date back to the fourteenth century and the square ones, more robust, to the sixteenth century. The White Tower has been talked about and written at length in the past, due to the fact that until the 1960s it served as a cemetery. It was even discussed at the League of Nations and there were those who compared it to the Indian “towers of silence”. However, this noble burial ground has never had anything macabre and funeral, so much so that hunters and hikers have always flowed onto the promontory where it stands: perhaps it is correct to consider it a symbol or a “venerable avello”. It is said that one day, in front of this old Saracen building, the inhabitants of Conca realized that there were two elderly American tourists kneeling. “What are you doing in that position?” “We are praying to God to let us die here and be buried in the tower. This is the most beautiful place in the world.” They were convinced to desist from that kind of prayer. Every year, even today, they return to Conca: this time to have fun.

Miss Amalfi Coast

Like a woman from whom it is impossible not to be fascinated, Conca dei Marini is a small jewel in the great treasure of the Amalfi Coast. Falling in love with it is all too easy: those who have already learned about every landing place and inlet in this sea of a “dense as molten metal” blue, have immediately elected their “Miss Costiera”. Between sudden leaps up to four hundred meters high, she runs along the sea for about three kilometers: that’s enough to capture the gaze first and then the heart, to those who move between Amalfi and Praiano. Whitewashed houses, with domes, nestled along the hill of S. Pancrazio and in the lemon groves of Sant’Antonio. Panoramic glimpse of suggestive beauty, the seaside village perched in the bend of the sea is Conca dei Marini, a small seaside resort which in the seventies included Princess Margaret of England among its most loyal regulars. Its name is the consequence of a cultural heritage that speaks of an ancient seafaring attitude. Adventurous stories of boats and sails, storms, shipwrecks and lots of expertise.

"Piennolo" cherry tomatoes

They have an almost round shape, rather small and as soon as they are collected they are arranged in a “piennolo” (that is, a bell tower), by means of a thin string which, in addition to keeping them together, allows you to hang them in a dry and shaded area to be able to keep them all year round . The cherry tomatoes ripen on the sunny terraces and, keeping the iodine flavor, allow to give the tasty fish sauces and soups a unique and inimitable flavor.

Sant'Antonio

Placed on a rocky ledge, this church dating back to 1200 dominates the sea from a steep slope. More suited to a castle, its particular position however protected it from the incursions of pirates and Saracens who, in these places, attacked and sacked with unprecedented ferocity. Today, despite the various restorations, the architectural structure has preserved the ancient harmony that conveys a feeling of spirituality and peace to visitors. Every year, on June 13, at the first light of dawn, groups of faithful in prayer arrive from neighboring countries, barefoot. From the paths hidden among the green of the olive and lemon trees, the song of the “scapellate” spinsters, barefoot girls dressed in white who, in deep veneration, go to the feet of the Saint to glorify him or ask for a grace. This atmosphere of great humility gives rise to intense emotion and, for brief moments, restores man’s origins.

San Pancrazio

A different panoramic point offers the esplanade which, almost in the shape of a ship – the so-called “vreca” tip – stands in front of the church of San Pancrazio. It is accessed via a convenient staircase that starts from the Amalfi-Positano road, near the Belvedere hotel. The view from here is superb, but even better is the one that can be enjoyed from the parish priest’s house and the bell tower of San Pancrazio. The church is surrounded by a beautiful olive grove crossed by a scenic stairway remembered by the verses of Alfonso Gatto and the paintings of Mario Avallone and Clemente Tafuri. In a room of the church there are still numerous paintings that document the “ex-votos” for the miracles attributed to Don Gaetano Amodio, repeatedly invoked by sailors in times of danger. Here we continue to feel the tension and the feeling of fear of the people of Conca, which keeps alive the memory of the victims of the shipwrecks.
